SEB BOYS DON'T CRY

Innovative songwriter SEB had always planned to release his song ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ around this time, yet he couldn’t have expected the poignancy of his message. The song is labelled and pop, and certainly it falls into the alternative-pop category, yet it’s one of those tracks that constantly surprises the listener. What starts as a lo-fi acoustic guitar recording, turns into an upbeat trap track with traces of jungle and hip-hop. Embedded within those catchy rhythms is a discussion around mental health as a Black man in today’s society, which emphasises unrealistic ideas of masculinity. Within ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, you’ll find vulnerability in SEB’s lyrics. He honestly sings “I can’t handle the pressure, / It gives me depression, / I use it as a weapon,” and with that there’s a way we can all deal with our feelings of grief, sadness, anxiety and frustration. Those emotions are a powerful thing. Be sure to listen to ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ via a service of your choice that directly monetizes songs to SEB, as all proceeds he makes will be donated to The Bail Project until June 17th. - Hannah Thacker
